2024 HIGHLIGHTS

Imagine a future where your voice shapes the digital policies of the EU—a future where young leaders like you drive the transformation of the internet landscape.

Born from the dynamic discussions at IGF 2023 Open Forum, the Youth IGF EU is a platform to influence and create impact.

UNDER THE PATRONAGE OF Mr Cristian BUSOI

Cristian-Silviu BUSOI is a Member of the European Parliament and Chair of the Industry, Research and Energy Committee (ITRE). He is also Member of the Subcommittee on Public Health (SANT) as well as substitute Member of the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) and Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON), rapporteur for EU4Health and EP contact MEP for European Medicine Agency.

Since 2007, he has been elected as Member of the European Parliament for four consecutive terms.

The first Youth IGF EU meeting was a great success, with over 150 registered participants and strong support from members of the European Parliament, the European Commission, and the European domain name sector. The event emphasized the importance of including young people in internet governance and AI cybersecurity. Participants, as digital natives, stressed that their insights can improve inclusivity and address digital challenges.

Key points included the protection of platform workers' rights, investment in youth for a sustainable digital future, and a multidisciplinary approach to governance. The event highlighted EU support for youth capacity development and called for tech designers to prioritize reliability and resilience. Concerns about encryption backdoors' impact on privacy and freedom of speech were also raised.

I think digital is a priority. I think that we have adopted good laws, Digital ID, Digital services, just the Digital Markets Act, of course, AI. For me, maybe what is important is the social, socio economic aspect of digital. - Amb. Marina Kaljurand, MEP.

I think that the future of internet governance needs to be based on the multistakeholder aspects as it has functioned well in past years. New challenges will come as new technological solutions and innovations will occur. — Miapetra Kumpula-Natri, MEP.

Investing in young people is our investment in a better sustainable future. And in the digital sphere this is very relevant. Digital technology is evolving at an unprecedented pace. It's impact on our lives is happening much faster than people realize. - Anja Gengo, Internet Governance Forum Secretariat.

We are using the technologies as much as we can. But as a matter of fact, still 2.6 billion people around the world are not connected to the internet. And part of it is believed to be attributed to the fact that people cannot use their local languages. – Regina Fuchsova, Industry Relations Manager, EURid.

We have interoperability problem because we have many systems and applications. They are growing like mushrooms everywhere. (...) they grow by themselves. So they don't usually talk with each other. - Prof. Pedro R. M. Inácio,  University of Beira Interior, Portugal.
